ParticipantHi! I´m new here and thought I should introduce myself. I found The British Druid Order by accedent finding a link to your net pages and got interested. In Finland autumn is exiting time when schools start again and many other studing. I´m 52 years and don´t go to work any longer. I got depression about 25 years ago and I have to say after that I´ve studied The Life. I´ve tried to start many different things and nothing works for me. Most of the time I´m at home. I started reading spiritual books I found from the library. Later I´ve bought a few for my own bookshelf. At this time my biggest worry is the unstable world. I´m interested in shamanism etc. I have a tip how you can make your own runes. You need a book about runes. Then you need little flat stones which you can find outside for a walk. Then you can paint rune signs using acrylic paint. I also wash the stones before painting by using water and raw salt. I let them be in water over night. Then you let them dry long enough before painting and after that. Put the runes into a proper bag and then you can use your runes everyday if you like. It´s that feeling you´ve made them yourself is unique and your runes are unique. Best wishes from South Finland:) Vuokko

DowrgiParticipantHello and welcome Päivi,
Thanks for that interesting information. You might also find Ogham interesting, too.
It´s that feeling you´ve made them yourself is unique and your runes are unique.
That is a very good point.

GreywolfKeymasterWelcome, Päivi,
Having suffered from depression since childhood myself, I empathise. It’s the creative, bardic side of Druidry that’s helped keep me sane for the last 50 years; making and listening to music, reading and writing, drawing, making things. What all arts and crafts have in common is that sense that you’re bringing into existence something that did not previously exist and would never have existed without your work and skill. It’s a good feeling. The daily news often seems designed to convince us that the world is a dark and terrible place and continually getting worse. Creativity is a ship in which we can ride out the storm.
Many blessings,

Dave TheDruid-3X3ParticipantThere must be some Special Paint for making the Rune Stones you describe that is made so that the Paint is resilient enough not to Chip Off as your Casting the Runes.
What sort of Paint do you recommend?

ParticipantHi!
And Thank you for your messages! I used acrylic paint, I´m not sure if it is that in english. It´s no need to paint the whole stone, just that symbol. You can do it twice or even three times. It stays there. Actually, I took one of my books “By oak, ash and thorn” written by D.J.Conway and I found out it´s this book where I found how to paint your own runes! Page 193 says it is acrylic paint.
I agree that creativity is very important for our well being but sometimes it´s unnoticed. People are buzy to earn living and so they are tired and so on. It doesn´t matter what you do just do something. In Finland old people used to say “The work teaches you” meaning that when you start a new project and you look at it a while and and wonder.. then you just know again what you should do next. I don´t know.. I think that I come out of the old school!
I know every country is different from another but I´d like to think there are some basic things that are the same for everyone as a human. We feel joy, happiness, sadness, fear, anger but still it is so difficult to talk about those things. I think I must find something about Ogham:)
Thank you for your kind words!Best wishes!

ParticipantHi
You people might wonder what I´m doing here. Like I said I got depression and my live is before and after that. At first I felt really empty inside and that time was many years and difficult. I got help but then I had to create something myself to this world like it is the way to start healing inside. I can´t tell how long depression lasts because it´t different journey to everyone. I started painting and writing but can´t say that I can do it like artists do. Many other things also like knitting. I can remember if there was something I didn´t like in school life has brought that subject into my life. English was one of my favor subjects and that is one reason why I´m here. I´ve tried to do spiritual work for healing myself. Maybe I need my limits and that´s what I came here to learn!Best wishes

ParticipantHello Rocala and thank you. I do appreciate that you took me as your member. This is really something new to me. Greywolf said about creativity that it is a ship in which we can ride out the storm. Lovely said and so true. About depression I was for years in state I couldn´t do anything but now I´m much better. My life since childhood
hasn´t been the easiest trip but now I know I can manage my chidhood events and circumstances. COPD brings to my life new aspects, I won´t live forever. My lugns work 30-50%. That´s why I remember I won´t be here forever and I try to live my life as well I can. I help my friend who lives in a same building than I do and he also helps me where he can. We both have our own illnessies. You learn your time here is precious. I got a chance to learn play guitar in open college. Couldn´t find any better word. It´s a college for everyone and there are many different courses. My Bible at the moment is finnish-english-finnish general dictionary:)
It´s been raining today. Can be seen that autumn is here again. It´s very beautiful season. I wrote nothing works for me but I was accepted to guitar course and I´m happy for that!Best Wishes

ParticipantHi! I´d like to write about depression and how it has affected to my life. I haven´t been able to work normally after it came. At this time I help my ex almost daily he has some health issues, too. I was officially his private nurse at home and did what ever came up any day. I was paid for nursing him it wasn´t much but something anyway. It helped me and gave me feeling that I do something useful in our community. The I got burn out. I was exhausted and tired. I tried to get help to our situation but the answer was “no”. Then I quit the job and next thing was divorce because I had to get away so I got my life back to me. I haven´t spoken about my depression to the neighbours because mental issues are not wanted anyone´s own neighbourhood. We are like third-class people. On the other hand I have experienced clairvoyant and clearsightedness experiences and I see dreams which come true. Couple days ago I was sleeping at day time and in my dream a phone rang. I woke up and noticed it rang only once. I took the phone and saw it was only a dream but then couple of minutes later the phone actually rang and it was my ex. He has got used to my premonitions. This isn´t so rare to me. But, I don´t know where I can talk about these experiences! Everyone want to see and hear and people envy you if you tell your own story and yet I have depression. It brings me down from heights. I´ve seen the shadows. I was about 8-10 years. I had fears to sleep but no one I could talk to. I´m sure I should have had some help much younger but it was impossible. My mother and I weren´t the best “friends” at all just the opposite. My dream was to get away from home and then it happened my mom came to tell me I had to find my own place to live. At that time ! was working as office girl in a paper mill and my furure was a big guestion mark. So I was 16 when I left my childhood home and I´m still on that journey because she hasn´t and won´t take me back under her wings. The shadows came back when I got depression. It was very deep depression and I don´t wish it for anyone. I´ve spent a long time under my blanket feeling I can´t move my arms and legs.
How do you feel being treated by your society if you tell that you have deppression? Do you tell? Have you had spiritual experiences despite you have depression? I wish that one day my anxiety will be blown away:)Best wishes

GreywolfKeymasterHi Päivi,
Thank you for sharing some of your story with us. I also suffered from depression since childhood, had a bad relationship with my parents and left home at 16. I nursed my partner through a terminal illness that left me as single parent to two small children, both now in their early 30s. Druidry has provided me with coping mechanisms that have held the depression at bay. Most are to do with creativity. The old folks are so right when they say “The work teaches you.” I’ve always painted and drawn and those skills helped me through a serious breakdown I had when I was just 18. I’ve since learned to play guitar and various other instruments and find sitting down with one of them and making improvised music incredibly therapeutic. For the last 18 years I’ve been working on creating the BDO courses and that’s been really good for me. Not only do I enjoy the research and writing, I also feel I’m making some positive contribution to the world. There are also simple things like just going outside to watch a beautiful sunset or look up at the stars. The recurring sense that the gods are taking an interest also helps! May Lleu Llaw Gyffes, lord of light, dispel the shadows!
Many blessings,

DowrgiParticipantHi Päivi,
Thank you for your posts, and thank you for showing such courage and being so open as to be so frank with everyone here. I do confess that I’m always somewhat reluctant these days, or at least not sure how, to reply to posts like yours as I’m not a ‘professional’ and in no way qualified to speak on ‘clinical’ matters.
Having stated that as a kind of ‘disclaimer’, what I would say, from my strictly own point of view, is that I find the modern obsession with being perennially bright and cheery and positive somewhat depressing at times. It’s as if sadness, melancholy, and hiraeth were somehow not valid as a feeling or sentiment. I know people mean well, but sometimes I don’t actually want to be cheered up, just have my melancholy recognised for what it is. I don’t know if that makes sense, and I know that there is a world of difference between clinical depression and just feeling a bit down, but, paradoxical as it may seem, I don’t think ‘enforced positivity’ is always positive – I see it as a papering over the cracks instead of working to heal those cracks if you see what I mean.
What I would say, again speaking from personal experience, is that I recognise the validity of my feelings and work from there. If these feelings are positive, negative, or something else is beside the point, just acknowledging them for what they are, I find, is key in working towards a better outcome – a bit like the Buddha recognising, and pitying, his ‘demons’.
Anyway, good to hear from you, and keep us posted …

ParticipantHi,
Thank you for showing intrest toward a foreigner. Surely my posting seems weard but what is said is done. I´m not so proud of all my actions but kind of all actions have their inner reason. Mine is a long lasting anxioty and my own feeling about not belongin anywhere. I have to go far to my childhood where I remember I was a happy little being. Now I take my pills my back is killing me have difficulties to take long walks what I used to do years ago. Then I take my pills and become tired and numb (comfortably?). Too selfcentered and what else. If you´re poor you have to be humble. Money is everything for some people and they think it brings safety. For what? Funny thing here is now I´m soon 53 years and just found what I´d like to do. I´d like to play guitar. I have one but my fingers are old and so on. The guitar has its own sad story I´m not willing to share. It´s very true that positivity can hide a sad side. There you don´t talk you don´t walk. Never believe in beautiful pictures. They have a lot of work behind them. I´m glad I´ve had this time here to share things about my life. Silence is the worst when you can´t talk to anyone. Believe I know otherwise I wouldn´t be so damn finnish. I´d rather liked to play an istrument, words are so hard.
I wish you all good things:)Best wishes
