Vanessa SpenceI’m glad that Cornish has been revived and is flourishing within Cornwall. The same can be said about the Goidelic language Manx Gaelic (Gaelg). When I visited the Isle of Man, I went to an open-air folk museum called Cregneash, which is about a mile from Port Erin in the southwest of the island. In one of the old cottages, which looks very much like the old cottages in western Ireland and parts of Scotland, there are recordings of Ned Maddrall, who was the last native speaker of Manx Gaelic as a mother tongue. These archived recordings led the Irish Taoiseach Eamonn de Valera to propose reviving the Manx language, and since then, it has experienced more support from Tynwald and is taught in Manx schools. The Manx Museum in Douglas also has a section on the Manx Gaelic. It’s fascinating.
