In short, no, unfortunately there isn’t.
What we do know is that the site seems to have existed as some kind of ritual centre for about 10,000 years—from the Mesolithic onwards. That covers the movements of peoples, cultures, and transition to agriculture and the bronze, right up until about 3600 years ago, when building and development seem to have stopped. Nevertheless, remains from later periods—Roman, Anglo-Saxon, etc.—have also been found. Given its imposing nature and given the wealth of folklore and’superstition’ around megalithic sites in general, it’s hard to believe that historical Druids merely ignored the place, likewise Avebury. There are some who argue for a great deal of continuity throughout history rather than abrupt breaks, evidenced by archaeological finds; one example being bog, lake, and river deposits, which seem to carry on right up until the mediaeval period—even today people toss coins into bodies of water for good luck, don’t they?
