I’ve just discovered that there’s a small town in Northern Italy that also has a celebration this weekend and that it may have some pre-Christian, Celtic elements. A number of different festivities from between 1st-3rd August include the Festival of the Sun. These events are held in Canzo, Lombardy. Given that this was once, long ago, a Celtic cultural area, to which many place names still bear witness, it’s tantalising to think that some very ancient traditions may have survived here until the present day, albeit diluted and blended with time.
