Greywolf's Sources of Inspiration
Here are just a few of the things that float my metaphorical boat:
Music: specifically the music of The Incredible String Band, Robin Williamson, The Moody Blues, The Beach Boys and Quintessence because these artists all set out with the aim of uplifting the human spirit. My personal favourite albums by each of them are:
Incredible String Band: Wee Tam and the Big Huge
Robin Williamson: The Island of the Strong Door, unfortunately now deleted and only available at a high price. As an alternative, try the almost equally wonderful A Glint at the Kindling.
The Moody Blues: A Question of Balance
The Beach Boys: Smile, arguably the greatest album never made. Brian Wilson brought out a version recently, which is superb, while the Beach Boys 1967 version has been reconstructed by various fans and can be found as mp3s if you search hard enough.
Quintessence: Quintessence
Comic Books: In the 1960s, Marvel Comics turned me on to paganism via The Mighty Thor, as portrayed by legendary artist, Jack 'King' Kirby, and magic via Doctor Strange, portrayed by the great Steve Ditko. More recently, I've rediscovered the Kabalah via Alan Moore's magical series featuring the goddess Promethea. For the original comics and later reprints go to MyComicShop.
Novels: Including Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (of course), Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea Quartet, and James Stephens' The Crock of Gold.
Art: My favourite painting of all time is Garden in Arles by Vincent van Gogh. Even the best image I could find online really doesn't do it justice. I stood in front of the original lost in awe and wonder. Now that's awen. Another artist whose work I find deeply inspiring is Lucien Freud, who seems to view humanity with a gaze at once analytical and tender.
The Quileute: A small tribal community on the NorthWest Pacific coast of America, descended from shape-shifting wolves. Some of the finest people it's ever been my privilige to know. Check out their website.
The Natural World: In particular sunrises, the sea, woodland and mountains.
