Hi folks,
I avoided social networking sites for a long time, fearing they might be just another excuse to avoid work ;) . Finally I gave in, because I want to see if such sites can be genuinely useful ways to spread ideas and information. So, there is now a British Druid Order page on Facebook :!: . To access it, you need to be signed up to Facebook yourself (a relatively quick and painless process). Then you sign in and put 'British Druid Order' into the search box at the top of your page.
At present, there are a few photos and links, and it'll get more interactive and interesting as I learn more about how Facebook works. The BDO page only went 'live' a couple of days ago and has already attracted 59 'fans :) .'
Incidentally, I've also set up a Facebook page to show some of my artwork, which you can find by typing in 'Philip Shallcrass: Artist.' :ugeek:
Once I've figured out how to get music onto it, there will also be a Facebook page for the music I produce under the name 'Greywolf.' I'll keep you posted.
I'm also setting up a page for 'this is the year we save the world,' again, once I can figure out how to get sound files to run on it. I'll keep you posted on that too. :)
By the way, I've already found one real advantage to Facebook, which is that having a Facebook presence enables people you haven't seen for years to find you. I'm already back in contact with lovely folks I'd lost touch with a decade or more ago. Yay! :D
Many blessings,
Greywolf /|\

Hello all,

O.K., I have signed up, and now I am a fan of the British Druid Order on Facebook. Between this, the "Join the B.D.O." e-mail option, and the B.D.O. message board, I am really starting to "feel" like a member :D . Even though physically I am far across the sea, it is nice to be united in spirit with other like-minded people 8-) .

Hi Griffin,
I'm still learning about Facebook and have now set up a 'group' on it for the British Druid Order, which is what I probably should have done in the first place rather than setting up a 'page.' Why didn't I? Not hard: at the time I set up the 'page' I didn't know that 'groups' existed  . Facebook is not the clearest application in the world to find your way around. A lot of its functionality seems to be hidden so that you either stumble across it by accident or need to hunt for and then follow external guides to particular aspects of it.
As a newcomer, I'm probably making all kinds of elementary errors and may be bombarding people with far too many messages, half the time not even realising I'm doing it  . No matter, doubtless I'll learn ... :)
The idea of these various web-presences is, as ever, to spread the awen. The great advantage of the web is that it does this without regard to geographical boundaries. Yay! :D
Peace,
Greywolf /|\

Hi Greywolf,

I found the new BDO group on have joined. It believe that the BDO presence on Facebook will indeed foster the spread of Awen :) . I feel like I am present at the birth (or perhaps "rekindling") of something. I know social networks have their down side, but not everyone who uses them are the stereotypical shallow, self-involved types that have given social networking a bad name. I am going to get familiar with Facebook myself, and see if I can filter things a bit. I had a MySpace account, and while it was nice to receive automated messages that hot single Druid girls in Tampa are looking for me, they were definitely barking up the wrong tree ;).

Somewhere in cyberspace I have a Facebook page, but I'm blessed if I know where, or how to use it!

I'll stick with forums, I can cope with those.

Cheers, Ayana

Hi Ayana,

I understand the sentiment :) . I think the Facebook thing is a good idea, but it's kind of like going out into the city for a fancy party :? while the forum is like being cozy at home among family :D.

That's right, I feel safer on the Forums, somehow.

Cheers, Ayana

Not sure what's to feel 'unsafe' about being on facebook, but all I know is that I smile when I think of Greywolf seeming to fall asleep and wanting to give him a 'poke', lol. I know, I know, he's a busy guy... And for sure, I'm certainly not blameless in its snoozy disposition! Just nice to be in the web, spreading tendrils of touch all over everywhere to connect with our virtual and most esteemed selves. It's a fact I get little of it in RL - until May perhaps! ;)

Facebook is a strange environment, partly because it's hard to find your way around it and work out what it can do. It's not exactly intuitive and facebook's own help system isn't much use unless you already know what you're looking for. If it hadn't been for some very kind people posting clear, step-by-step guides online, I'd never have got started. Even so, I still started a BDO 'page' when I should have started a BDO 'group.' Who knew? Anyway, there's now one of each  .
And, thanks to a facebook post, I've now learned about another networking thingy called (for reasons unknown) ning. So there might be a ning page cropping up soon.
Biggest advantage of facebook? Getting back in touch with people I hadn't heard from for years :D .
Biggest disadvantage? As with everything computer-related, it takes up more time than you think it will :(
And 'poking?' What's that about? 'Would you like to poke (insert name here)?' I mean, really, what kind of a question is that? Maybe poking doesn't have quite the same connotations in the US where facebook originated?
